Sheet Bend

The sheet bend is one of the few good knots used for tying two ropes of different diameters and types together. But you can also use it for two ropes of the same diameter and type. It is easy to tie and just as easy to untie. The more strain on the knot, the better it holds. This knot is the one to use whenever you need a longer piece of rope or you just need to join two ropes together.

• Step one - Form a loop or bite in the heavier rope and hold it with your right hand as shown.
• Step two - Bring the running end of your lighter rope up through the bottom of the heavier rope with your left hand.

• Step three - Bring the end of the lighter rope behind and around the heavier rope. See the figure below.

• Step four - Then pass the end of the lighter rope under its own standing part, leaving about 6 inches or more of free rope.

• Step five - Hold the standing part of the lighter rope with your left hand and the standing part of the heavier rope with your right hand and pull to tighten.
